Troubleshooting the RØDECaster App.

The console isn’t detected, Windows lost the virtual devices, the PC won’t boot with it plugged in, or an update is stuck. Causes and fixes.

The console isn’t detected

  1. Right app? The RØDECaster Pro II, Duo, Video and Streamer X only appear in the RØDECaster App. RØDE Central will not show them, and neither app shows the original 2018 RØDECaster Pro, which needs the Companion App.
  2. Direct cable. RØDE’s first instruction is to connect the device straight to the computer — some hubs and docks interfere with communication.
  3. Right port. USB 1 on the Pro II and Duo. USB 2 on the RØDECaster Video, with a SuperSpeed cable, or the same network.
  4. Current app. Startup detection was improved in 2.0.101 and each macOS release has needed its own fix; update the app.
  5. Reinstall cleanly. Uninstall the app, install the current version, then reconnect.

Windows: the virtual audio devices are missing

The Pro II and Duo add virtual devices on Windows for expanded routing. If they vanish or never appear, RØDE’s sequence is:

  1. Update both the console firmware and the latest Virtual Device driver (from the RØDECaster Virtual Devices guide).
  2. On the console: Settings → Outputs → Multitrack, enable Expanded USB 1 Input and Pre/Post Fader USB 1 Output.
  3. Open the Virtual Device application and confirm it is talking to the console. Make sure Bypass is off; with it on, the channels don’t communicate.
  4. If the channels don’t show in Windows audio settings, go to Settings → Faders on the console and assign at least one Virtual Device channel (Music, Game, A or B) to a fader.
  5. Windows may have disabled unused devices. In Sound Settings → More Sound Settings, right-click and tick Show Disabled Devices, then re-enable the RØDECaster entries on both the Playback and Recording tabs.

The computer won’t turn on with the console connected

During USB negotiation the Pro II and Duo can present 5 V on USB 1. Some USB controllers read that as an external power supply and refuse to boot, or shut down unexpectedly. RØDE’s workaround is a USB hub between the computer and the console, which hides the voltage from the computer’s detection. Yes, this is the one case where a hub is the fix rather than the problem.

A firmware update is stuck

A hang at the very end of an update on certain devices was fixed in the app in December 2025. Update the app and retry, or use the network route: put the console on Wi-Fi or Ethernet and let it update itself. Never unplug mid-update.

RØDECaster Video: the drive won’t record

USB 3 storage has to be exFAT. Format it on the switcher under Settings → Storage → USB Storage → Erase, or from the app, which can eject and erase drives since 2.0.104. A slow drive triggers the speed advisory added in firmware 1.2.12.

Sounds won’t load onto a pad

Convert to WAV or MP3. Unsupported or corrupted files are flagged by the app and cleared by the console. MP3 import to the Video was fixed in 2.0.111.

Still stuck?

Check the FAQ, then the changelog — a surprising number of “my device does X” problems are a known issue fixed in a release you don’t have yet.
